Character Information

Name: Kaden

Canon Point: Post-game
Age: It’s never explicitly stated in-game, and kitsune have a long life span anyway, but he looks early 20s in human years so let’s go with that.
History: Link to Kaden’s history | Link to the overall game plot (since Kaden only features in a small part and then tags along for the rest)

Personality:

Look at your mental image of a kitsune. Now back at Kaden. Now back at your mental image of a kitsune. Now back at Kaden. Sadly, your mental image of a kitsune is… well, mostly correct, actually, and the Old Spice commercial reference stops here. But despite being very much a typical kitsune, and despite being outwardly vain and prideful, beneath it all Kaden is a very kind, considerate, and caring individual.

Bullet point number one on Kaden’s list of traits both attractive and extremely attractive is the fact that he is, well, very obsessed with appearance. He is said to have the best posture in the army, and he takes pride in grooming himself - so much so that he sets aside at least a couple of hours every day to dedicate to the task, and constantly boasts in both his My Room lines and his support scenes with other characters that his fur is the softest and fluffiest around. This knowledge of grooming also extends to animals, as seen in his supports with Hinoka, where he is spotted grooming a pegasus and gives Hinoka a lesson involving no less than three different types of brushes.

Which leads to another focus of Kaden’s supports: the fact that he is extremely good with animals. In Hinoka’s support, the pegasi comfortably allow a fox to be in the stables with them; in his support with Felicia, he rescues an injured kitten and begs Felicia for help in rehabilitating it. He is also admonished by Hana for getting injured in combat, only to find out that Kaden was injured because he’d noticed a bird’s wing had been clipped during the fight, and he’d dove in to rescue it. Though he’s meticulous about his own appearances and grooming, he is willing to sacrifice his own safety to help an animal, and it doesn’t just stop there.

Kaden has a penchant for returning favors. It’s a key tag line of his, so to speak: he mentions it a lot, and he would not actually have joined Corrin’s army at all if not for a string of favor after favor leading him to Cyrkensia, where he bumped into them. If someone does something kind for him, no matter how big or small and no matter whether that person is good or bad, he feels compelled to return it somehow, and will not rest until he is satisfied that his debt has been repaid. In his support with Corrin, he was simply given a bit of candy because his stomach was growling, and in return he went to help Corrin with their shopping. However, there is a downside: sometimes he is a little too eager to help, and it ends up being more a nuisance than a boon. Take his support with Kagero, for example. She helped him in battle, so naturally he wanted to repay the favor, but as she had indicated that that sort of favor didn’t need to be repaid, he decided to hang around her instead, looking for an opening to repay her for her assistance. But, in doing so, he was actually hindering her from doing her job, because ninjas have to be sneaky and can’t have tagalongs. He recognized this, however, and turned his attentions toward a different means of repaying his self-perceived debt instead, so that he wouldn’t be a burden to her.

Despite this kind and caring side, though, he is still very much a kitsune and is swift and sly as they come. This is expressed in a much more mischievous way in his support with Hayato, where his young friend seems to enjoy doing fun and supposedly childish things like climbing trees, but is too embarrassed and tsundere to admit to it or want anyone to see him doing it. As a result, Kaden cleverly twists it to make it seem more like a good thing, where he can still say he climbed the tree, but only to pick apples and share them with everyone. In the end, it made Hayato seem less like he was acting childish and more like he was just considerate. However, this sly nature does not only apply to innocent things. In the Conquest route, where he is an enemy instead of an ally, Corrin’s army has to cross through the mountains to avoid Hoshidan forces, which leads them right into kitsune territory. Kaden appears before them, and though he seems friendly and amicable at first, the group quickly realizes that this is just a facade, as the kitsune forces had surrounded them while Kaden served as a distraction. This shows that he is a strong and capable leader: his people had secluded themselves deep within the mountains because humans wanted to kill them for their fur, and as such, humans couldn’t be trusted. Kaden even mentioned they seemed like nice people and in any other situation he’d have wanted to be friends with them, but because they had intruded on kitsune territory, he had no choice but to kill them to protect his own. Unfortunately, this did not end well for the kitsune, but. Well. A valiant effort was made.

Being so secluded, though, has made Kaden somewhat carefree and gullible when it comes to human things. He has shown to be easily excitable, as the concept of Mozu cooking a fish for him made him eager to have the fish now and waiting was proving to be a difficult task. Azama was easily able to convince him that he’d predicted a surprise rainshower because the gods had spoken to him, even though he’d simply looked at the sky and noticed the clouds were growing dark. Charlotte, too, took advantage of his kind and gullible nature, and purposely helped him out to get him to return a favor, tricking him into trading in his shed fur for gold nuggets, as that was the only thing she indicated that she wanted. On the opposite side of this, though, his brief interaction with humans is probably the reason for him being so blunt and honest with what he says. Things are just different back at the kitsune village, and his travels have only made him minimally familiar with how the human world works.

Kaden also seems reluctant to do anything involving unnecessary physical exertion - he seems less than enthusiastic about Hinata’s offer to train to get over homesickness, and even less so about Hinata dragging him on a hike through the woods. He would much rather spend his time napping under trees in the breeze and sunshine, as seen in his support with Sakura, where they become nap buddies because "nodding off’s not so scary if everyone’s dozing together". It isn’t because he’s worried about getting his fur dirty, as he mentions rolling in leaves and running around the forest with the other kitsune back in his village, but because he is a simple fox from a simple place. In his default ending text, if he does not marry anyone, it reads that, "Kaden returned home, living out the remainder of his days as if he had never gone to war. Scholars disagree as to whether this is because he was adaptable or just simple-minded."

Abilities:

Kitsune Form: Utilizing a Beaststone, Kaden is able to transform into his full fox form, which is roughly the same size as a mounted unit's horse.

Agility: Kaden is naturally agile, and in battle has a high ability to dodge attacks. He's able to dodge in and out of battle with ease, delivering attacks without suffering damage. The counter to this is that his defense isn't all that great, so while he can avoid getting hit most of the time, if he does get hit, it usually hurts.

Heightened Senses: As a kitsune, his senses are much sharper than a human. In his support with Setsuna, he has been shown to be able to pick out ground traps and trip wires that she couldn't see, could smell that some berries had been recently handled by human hands, and could see that there was poison on them to boot. Understandably, his sense of hearing would be similarly sharp.

Strengths: Loyal, helpful, determined, friendly, eager
Weaknesses: Prideful, mischievous, over-enthusiastic, lazy, opportunistic

God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: With Kaden’s extreme loyalty, he would make a much more solid shinki. Going the route of god would be too easy, as he’s got an ego a mile wide and a vain streak just as big, and he’s already used to being in command of a village. I’d like to explore him being in the role of serving under someone, as he fought in Corrin’s army, though not necessarily under Corrin. I feel he’d be a lot more of a dedicated guard fox than the carefree role he plays in canon, and I’d like to explore that.

Cause Of Death: After the war, Kaden took his leave from the rest of Corrin’s army with the aim to return to his village and settle back into the role of chief. Along the way, he ran into a group of humans that had their eyes on his fur but acted friendly towards him. Though he was initially a bit wary, Kaden grew to enjoy their company and traveled along with them for a short while, as they’d invited him in for food and drink, and he had to find a way to repay the favor before he could return home. However, when he least expected it, they turned against him, and… well, a group of organized humans ended up being more than even a kitsune chief could handle alone.

Vessel: A large, horse-sized fox.
Name Location: The side of his neck, under where a human ear would be.
Power: Foxfire Manipulation - Allows his god to utilize blue foxfire, which can manifest from either his god’s hands or mouth. Alongside being able to burn enemies, if his god has obtained any minor wounds, it can also be used to absorb a minor amount of life force from an enemy and heal those wounds (if the enemy has enough of a life force for this to be applicable).
